ASE Certified Master Technician
ASE Certified Master Technician (the highest certification awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence)
That’s not a tagline. It’s the oath Shawn Baker wrote when he founded South Bay Luxury Motors in July 2022. It’s printed in the shop. It guides every repair, every diagnosis, every customer conversation.
Shawn has spent over 20 years as an automotive technician. He’s serviced more than 20,000 vehicles. He’s maintained fighter aircraft in active combat zones, graduated with honors from one of the country’s top automotive programs, earned ASE Certified Master Technician and EPA certifications, and led the engineering team that built the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell semi-truck.
But the credential that matters most to the 185 customers who left five-star reviews? He tells the truth. Every time.
It started with fighter jets.
Shawn Baker enlisted in the United States Marine Corps straight out of high school. He was assigned to aviation maintenance, responsible for keeping fighter aircraft in combat-ready condition in active war zones. When you’re working on aircraft that carry Marines into battle, there’s no room for shortcuts. You check your work twice. You follow procedures exactly. You use the right parts, the right torque specs. Lives depend on it.
That experience didn’t just teach Shawn how to fix things. It taught him a standard. A level of precision and accountability that most civilian mechanics never encounter. And it became the foundation for everything that came after.
After his honorable discharge, Shawn enrolled at Universal Technical Institute (UTI), one of the most respected automotive training programs in the country. He graduated with honors, earning a degree in Automotive, Diesel, and Industrial Technologies. From there, he earned his ASE Certified Master Technician credential and his EPA certification.
But school and certifications were just the beginning.
Shawn spent over two decades working inside the automotive industry. Dealerships. Independent shops. Specialty facilities. He did it all.
He trained at authorized service centers for German luxury brands. He learned the specific engineering quirks of Porsche flat-six engines, BMW inline-sixes, Audi turbocharged four-cylinders, and Mercedes V8s. He became the technician other technicians asked for help.
He served as lead technician and shop foreman at multiple facilities for over 15 years. That means he wasn’t just fixing cars. He was training other mechanics, managing workflow, and setting quality standards for entire shops.
Then came the project that most people can’t believe when they hear it.
Shawn was recruited to lead the mechanic and engineering team that designed, built, and tested the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell semi-truck. Not a concept drawing. Not a prototype that sat in a lab. A real, functional, road-ready hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 truck. He led the team that made it work.
That experience taught him something critical: complex problems have solutions when you’re willing to dig deep and do the work right. It’s the same approach he brings to every BMW oil leak, every Porsche electrical gremlin, and every Audi transmission issue that walks through the doors of South Bay Luxury Motors.
Because he was tired of watching the industry fail its customers.
For 20 years, Shawn saw the same problems play out in every shop he worked at. Service writers pushing unnecessary repairs to hit sales targets. Shops clearing check engine lights without fixing the root cause. Customers getting quoted $5,000 for brake jobs that should cost half that. Female customers being condescended to and overcharged because someone assumed they didn’t know any better.
He tried to fight it from the inside. He refused to upsell. He insisted on honest diagnoses. He treated every customer like a neighbor, not a transaction.
And customers noticed.
They started following Shawn from shop to shop. When he left one facility for another, his customers came with him. For over 12 years, a loyal group of vehicle owners tracked Shawn down wherever he went because they trusted him with their cars, their money, and their families’ safety.
“I’ve trusted Shawn Baker with my vehicles for over 12 years, from Audi to Tesla to VW, and his work has always been exceptional.” -- Fabiola G., Google Review
Eventually, Shawn realized the only way to build the shop he believed in was to build it himself.
In July 2022, he opened South Bay Luxury Motors at 4040 Spencer St, Unit Q, in Torrance, California. He chose Torrance because the South Bay has one of the highest concentrations of German luxury vehicles in Southern California, but very few independent specialists who can properly service them outside the dealership network.
He wrote an oath and hung it in the shop:
*“I am not just a mechanic. I am a craftsman, a protector of trust, a servant of precision, and a man of honor. I leave no job undone, no lie unchallenged, and no client unvalued. I am South Bay Luxury Motors.”*
Four years later, that oath holds. 185 five-star Google reviews. Zero negative reviews. Not one.
Plenty of shops claim to be honest. Here’s what honest looks like in practice at South Bay Luxury Motors.
He diagnoses correctly the first time. Shawn invested in the same dealer-level diagnostic scan tools that authorized Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes dealerships use. These aren’t generic code readers. They access manufacturer-level fault codes, test individual modules, and isolate problems that basic scanners miss. Over 15 reviews mention Shawn solving problems that other shops and dealerships couldn’t figure out.
“After taking it to multiple mechanics in the area with no one able to figure out the issue, I finally brought it to Shawn. Shawn got back to me the same day with a solution.” -- Israel B., Google Review
He won’t upsell you. Period. Over 50 of the shop’s 185 reviews specifically mention honesty and the absence of upselling. Shawn refuses to recommend work a vehicle doesn’t need, even when it would be more profitable. That’s not a marketing angle. It’s validated by the single largest theme across four years of customer feedback.
“On top of all the time he spent on my Subaru, he didn’t even charge me as it was a diagnostic problem only the dealer could fix. That’s an honest technician for you!” -- Jane Rohde Bowers, Google Review
He explains everything in plain language. No jargon designed to confuse. No vague estimates. Shawn and his team show customers photos of the issue, walk through the findings, provide itemized estimates, and require approval before any work begins. You’ll understand exactly what’s happening to your car and why.
“They provided a 25-point inspection that identified a rattling noise and aged transmission fluid, explaining the importance of age-based maintenance for low-mileage cars without being pushy.” -- Mike Uesugi, Google Review
He treats everyone with respect. Multiple female customers have specifically written about feeling safe and respected at South Bay Luxury Motors after years of being talked down to at other shops.
“As a woman that travels often, finding an honest mechanic has always been a thing. Being overcharged, being sold on things that I didn’t necessarily need, I’ve experienced it all. This place is different.” -- Vienna G., Google Review
He follows up. After your car is returned, Shawn or his team checks in to make sure everything is working correctly. That’s not standard in the industry. But it’s standard at SBLM.
Shawn’s qualifications aren’t just lines on a resume. They’re the reason he can diagnose problems that stump other shops and repair vehicles with the precision they were engineered to require.

The best proof of a mechanic’s skill isn’t a certificate on the wall. It’s the customers who show up after two or three other shops failed to fix the problem.
The $2,000 misdiagnosis. A customer brought in a vehicle after a dealership diagnosed a failed computer and quoted over $2,000 for replacement. Shawn ran dealer-level diagnostics and identified the actual cause: an electrical issue unrelated to the computer. Fixed it for a fraction of the dealership quote.
The battery that wasn’t a battery. A customer’s vehicle kept having issues after a shop replaced the battery. Shawn identified a transmission problem that the other shop had misdiagnosed as a battery failure.
“The dealership claimed it was just a battery issue. When the problem persisted, I turned to South Bay Luxury Motors and they quickly identified and resolved the actual issue with precision.” -- Mia C., Google Review
Three mechanics, zero answers. A vehicle came in with a persistent check engine light that three different mechanics had given up on. Shawn’s dealer-level scan tools and experience found the root cause and resolved it.
“Porsche quoted me $5,000 for a brake job. I called Shawn, and over the phone, he gave me a price that was a fraction of that.” -- Paola C., Google Review
These aren’t exceptions. They’re what happens when you pair 20 years of hands-on experience with the right diagnostic equipment and the patience to actually find the problem instead of guessing.
“I have a Porsche 911 and I am very selective on who I have work on my car. Expert level knowledge on luxury cars.” -- Dr. Jake B., Google Review
“If you want an honest mechanic who will tell you the truth and fix whatever ails your vehicle at an amazing price, you want Shawn.” -- Pastor Dan, Google Review

“I won’t be going to the dealership anymore.” -- Rice Hat Entertainment, Google Review
South Bay Luxury Motors isn’t a volume shop trying to push as many cars through the bay as possible. It’s a specialty facility built around one idea: do it right.
German luxury vehicle focus. Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. That’s our wheelhouse. We also service Maserati, Volkswagen, and Volvo. Specialization means Shawn and his team see the same engineering patterns, failure modes, and maintenance needs daily. A BMW N54 valve cover gasket replacement isn’t a learning experience here. It’s muscle memory.
Dealer-level diagnostic equipment. The same scan tools authorized dealerships use. Full manufacturer-level access to fault codes, module testing, and system diagnostics.
OEM-quality parts. We don’t use cheap aftermarket components to inflate margins. Your Porsche gets the brake pads it was designed to use. Your Audi gets the correct gasket material with the right torque specifications.
A team that shares the standard. Shawn hired people who care about the work, not just the paycheck. A service manager with over a decade of customer service experience. A parts specialist who sources the correct components for every German make. A team that communicates in English and Spanish to serve the full South Bay community.
